An Omnigrid ruler is a tool used to accurately measure and cut fabric. Omnigrid rulers are made from clear plastic and vary in size, and they have horizontal and vertical measurements allowing the user to accurately measure and cut the desired length and width. These rulers also feature 30, 45 and 60 degree lines allow for accurate measurements of angles. The Omnigrid is especially effective when cutting out shapes for quilts and other projects.

Lay the fabric out on a smooth cutting surface. When cutting fabric using a rotary cutter, lay the fabric on a cutting pad to avoid damaging the surface.
Lay the Omnigrid ruler horizontally on top of the fabric. Slide the Omnigrid to the edge of the fabric until you reach your desired width. For example, if you want to cut a strip 5 inches wide, locate the 5-inch measurement on the vertical edge of the Omnigrid and slide the ruler until the 5-inch line is square with the edge of the fabric.
Hold the Omnigrid ruler firmly in place and run your rotary blade or fabric pencil along the opposite edge of the Omnigrid. Locate your desired measurement on the horizontal edge of the Omnigrid and again slide the ruler to the edge of the fabric until it is square. Hold the ruler in place and cut or mark your vertical measurement.
Lay a cutting pad over a smooth level surface. Roll out the fabric onto the cutting pad and place the Omnigrid on top of the fabric.
Locate the degree lines running through the middle of the Omnigrid ruler. Each degree line is marked with a measurement. Find the line for your desired angle and square it with the edge of the fabric. When the degree line is square with the edge, the two horizontal sides of the Omnigrid will run across the fabric at the desired angle.
Hold the Omnigrid ruler firmly in place and draw or cut along either horizontal edge. If you are cutting a large piece of fabric and the Omnigrid ruler does not stretch across the entire surface, rotate the fabric, square the same angle line with the opposite edge and draw until the two lines connect.
