How to Use an HP Charger on a Dell Laptop

Updated July 20, 2017

While it is not recommended, you can use some HP chargers with Dell laptops. Different laptops use different power supply types and amounts, which is where the danger comes in with laptop charging. In theory, if both provide the same power to the laptop, then they will be fine. Note, however, that many laptop manufacturers consider using another charger type automatic voiding of the warranty. So proceed at your own risk.

Check the charger power input on the HP charger. This will usually be measured in a "xxx-xxxV - x.xA" volts - amperes measurement (replacing the "x" characters with numbers). This information can usually be found on a sticker on the underside of the HP charger.

Check the input power figures for the Dell laptop. If the output voltages are identical, then you may be able to proceed. If the amperage is the same or higher, then you will be able to use the different adaptor.
