Green laser pointers can be purchased from hobby shops, toy stores, office supply retailers and even drugstores. You can modify the output of the green laser pointer to increase its intensity by bypassing the limitation circuitry on the circuit board. The green laser beam, while still within the legal limits, will be powerful enough to burn paper at extremely close range. Your "burning" green laser pointer will require a few tools common to most homes but which can be obtained from a hardware store if necessary.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • Green laser pointer
  • Soft cloth
  • Pliers
  • 12-gauge solid core copper wire roll
  • Ruler
  • Wire cutters
  • Soldering iron
  • Solder
  • Bonding glue
  • Newspaper
  • Wet paper towel

  1. 1

Unscrew the battery cap from the back end of the green laser pointer. Remove the batteries from inside the battery compartment.

  2. 2

Hold the green laser pointer by the back end in one hand. Hold the pliers in the other hand.

  3. 3

Place a soft cloth around the front of the green laser pointer. Grip the front of the pointer with the jaws of the pliers. Twist the pliers to separate the front section of the pointer from the back. Separate the front section from the back.

  4. 4

Place the front section of the pointer horizontally on a work surface with the exposed laser module protruding out and facing right.

  5. 5

Cut a 2 inch length of copper wire from the copper wire roll with your wire cutters. Heat up the soldering iron for five minutes. Solder an end of the copper wire to the contact on the top of the plastic tab closest to the spring at the end of the circuit board. Let the solder cool for a minute.

  6. 6

Locate the contact at the opposite end of the circuit board situated to the right of the silver contact screw on the lower left corner of the circuit board. Solder the other end of the copper wire to this contact. Let the solder cool for a minute. Unplug the soldering iron.

  7. 7

Apply bonding glue around the rim of the back section. Place the front section back on the back section so that the laser module is again inside. Push the two sections together and hold for a minute so that the bonding glue can harden. Let the bonding glue set for a day. Then, place the batteries back into the battery compartment and screw the battery cap on.

  8. 8

Place a piece of newspaper on the work surface. Aim your green laser "burner" at the newspaper from an inch or two away. Press the power button and hold the laser beam steady on the newspaper. Release the power button when the newspaper begins to smoulder. Drop the wet paper towel on the newspaper.

Tips and warnings

  • Increasing the output of the green laser pointer will deplete the batteries much faster than normal usage.
  • The beam from a laser pointer, regardless of its strength, should never be aimed into the eyes of a person or a pet.
