How to Get Smiley Face Icons on Outlook

Updated July 19, 2017

Computer owners have long enjoyed using smiley face icons--also known as emoticons--in their online chats and e-mails. Although it is understood by most people online that a colon followed by a parenthesis indicates a smiley face, you might find it more enjoyable to use a picture of a smiley face in your Outlook e-mails. For this reason, Outlook 2010 includes a small symbol library. By accessing this library, you can insert a smiley face icon for the recipient of your message.

Open Outlook 2010 and begin typing a new message. Place the keyboard cursor in the location where you want the smiley face to appear.

Click the "Insert" tab at the top of the email message window.

Click the "Symbols" button on the right side of the window, and then click the "Symbol" button that appears below.

Click the smiley face icon in the window. Alternatively, click "More Symbols" to see the full collection. Once you have located the smiley face that you want to use, click it and then click the "Insert" button at the bottom of the window.

Click the "Close" button when you are finished inserting symbols in your e-mail.
