Hanging lamps are often used as task lighting. They are typically connected to household electrical wiring, operated by a wall-mounted switch or with an in-line switch somewhere on the power cord. Adding a pull-chain switch to a hanging lamp is a simple and inexpensive task that takes only minutes. The job requires a light-socket adaptor with a pull-chain switch. Light-socket adaptors are available in lighting departments of home improvement and many discount stores. No special skills or tools are required for this job.

Instructions

  1. 1

Turn off the light at the switch. Once the bulb cools, remove the light bulb from the hanging lamp by unscrewing it from the socket.

  2. 2

Screw the light bulb into the socket of the pull-chain adaptor. Screw the adaptor into the socket of the lamp.

  3. 3

Turn on the main switch to energise the lamp. Pull the chain on the adaptor to turn the lamp on or off.
