The HP printer monitors the amount of ink in the toner cartridge via a smart chip. These smart chips can detect when the ink in the cartridge is low and send a warning message to your display. Once you get this message, your printer will not print. Sometimes, however, the smart chip displays this warning when the ink cartridge is not low. Resetting the HP printer will also reset the toner smart chip and allow you to print again.
- Skill level:
Turn the printer off. Press and hold down the "Go" button.
Keep holding down the "Go" button, and turn the printer back on. The message "Cold Reset" shows on the display. If the printer does not have a display panel, all of the lights will turn red.
Release the "Go" button, and the display panel shows "Initializing," "Restoring" and then "Offline." If the printer does not have a display panel, the lights will go from front to back and then stop.
Press the "Go" button again to start the printer in normal online mode.
