Caring for skin at age 50 is as much about prevention, as it is about correcting what has already happened. Cell turnover is slower than it used to be, and your skin is losing moisture and elasticity. You need to be proactive and use products that restore moisture, protect the skin from the sun and help regenerate skin, so that it can repair the fine lines and wrinkles.

Cleanse twice a day, morning and night, with a gentle cleanser with a non-soap formula. Look for cleansers that are specifically targeted for mature, ageing skin as these are the most moisturising. Squirt out a dime-sized amount and massage gently into the skin. Wet a washcloth with warm water and rinse away cleanser by gently rubbing your face in a circular motion. Doing so will rinse away your cleanser and also gently exfoliate your skin.

Avoid excessive sun exposure. This can cause skin cancer and will speed up ageing.

Moisturise after your morning cleanse with a rich emollient cream or a serum. Look for facial moisturisers that contain antioxidants such as Vitamin C or peptides and have UVA/UVB protection with SPF 30 or SPF 15 at a minimum. Apply all over your face while it's still damp. This is because anti-ageing products react better to wet skin.

Moisturise after your nightly cleanse with a thick cream that contains retinoids, such as retinol or Retin-A. Because retinoids make your skin extra-sensitive to sun exposure, it's best to apply these at night before bed. Rub gently onto the face.

Begin visiting a dermatologist as a regular part of your routine. At this age it's important to be preventive, not only when it comes to ageing, but with the health of your skin.
