Transforming a typical school bus into a home on wheels is a large project. School-bus conversions cost at least a few thousand dollars and require creating a kitchen, sleeping space and bathroom. The conversion work will probably require at least a few months because of all of the parts you need to assemble. A motor home made from a school bus is street legal if properly plated and insured. Professional companies offer conversion services, but completing the process at home is also possible.

Remove the warning flashers and stop sign, standard on most school buses. Wash the school bus with a hose or car wash equipped for the bus. Paint the outside of the school bus, if desired.
Remove all the seats inside the school bus except the first two passenger seats on the left side. Rip up any floor mats. Sweep up leftover debris. Turn the first passenger seat around so it is facing the rear of the bus. Place a table in between the two seats. Screw the seats and table into the bottom of the bus using large bolts.
Build the cupboards and drawers using plywood, painted or stained if desired. Attach the cupboards to the bus using screws. Nail the cupboards together.
Install the toilet, which can be bought new or salvaged from another RV, in one back corner of the bus. Install the shower a few feet in front of the toilet. Build a wall using plywood around the toilet and bus. Stain or paint the wall.
Build two bunk beds in the back left corner of the bus using two-by-fours and screws. Place a twin size box spring and mattress on each bunk. Repeat the process to build bunk beds in front of the shower and in front of the back set of bunk beds.
Install a refrigerator near the kitchen cupboards. Place in between drawers and cover the drawers with a counter top. Install a stove beside the refrigerator.
