How to Burn a Super CDG Karaoke Disc

A Super CDG, or SCDG, is a playback format typically used by karaoke machines for simultaneous audio and video playback. These are basically data discs and could be burned to either CD or DVD, but since they tend to be large, burning to an empty DVD-R is probably your best bet. If you have a collection of mp3 and mgc files that are suitable for this purpose, compiling them SCDG is simply a matter of renaming the files and running them through an encoder.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things you need

  • Karaoke (mp3 + mcg) files
  • DVD writer
  • DVD-R
  • Software that burns SCDG (CAVS recommended)
  • SCDG encoder (scdg_encoder.exe, see Resources)
  1. 1

Click "My Computer" and navigate to the folder where the karaoke files are stored. Right-click the first mp3 file and select "Rename" from the context menu. Rename the file "00001.mp3," then rename the mcg file that goes with it "00001.mcg."

  2. 2

Rename each paired mp3 and mcg file in the same manner as described above. When you are finished, each mp3/mcg pair should have matching file names. For example, "00002.mp3" goes with "00002.mcg," and "00003.mp3" goes with "00003.mcg."

  3. 3

Double-click the desktop icon of your favorite text editor to launch it, or click "Start," then "Programs," and select it from the programs list.

  4. 4

Click "File," then "Save As," and name the new text file "scdg.cfg."

  5. 5

Type the name of each track on the SCDG disc in the format "##." Again, each track number should be 5 digits long. Do not leave a blank line at the end of this file or you will get errors.

  6. 6

Double-click "My Documents," right-click, select "Create New Folder," and name the new folder "SCDG."

  7. 7

Double-click "My Computer," navigate to the folder with all the prepared tracks, and click "Edit," then "Select All" to select all tracks. Click and drag those tracks to the "SCDG" folder to copy them there.

  8. 8

Navigate to the folder where "scdg_encoder.exe" is stored. Click and drag it to the "SCDG" folder to copy it there.

  9. 9

Double-click "scdg_encoder.exe" to extract four programs to the "SCDG" folder.

  10. 10

Double-click "SCDG.BAT." A new folder will be created, named "CAVS_MCG" and it should have a .dat file inside.

  11. 11

Double-click the desktop icon of your disc burning software to open it, or click "Start" and select your disc burning software from the programs list.

  12. 12

Place a blank DVD-R in the DVD burner.

  13. 13

Click and drag the "CAVS_MCG" folder to the burning software's workspace and click "Burn" to burn it as a data disc.

Tips and warnings

  • If you can't see file extensions, click "My Computer," then "Tools," then "Folder Options," and make sure the check box next to "Hide extensions for known file types" is empty.
