A varnished finish not only gives a shiny look to wood flooring, but provides a protective barrier that keeps dirt and residue from reaching the wood. To keep the floors looking their best for a longer time, you must properly clean and care for your flooring in a way that keeps the varnish looking glossy and residue-free.

  1. 1

Run a dust mop over your flooring at least once per week, or more often depending on the amount of traffic the area receives. This removes stones, food crumbs and other elements that, when stepped on, can indent and damage the finish as well as the wood.

  2. 2

Blot up spills immediately with a paper towel. Wipe the area with a damp paper towel after removing the spill and dry the floor with a clean paper towel.

  3. 3

Clean the floors regularly with a homemade cleaner by mixing 1 cup white vinegar with 1 gallon water. Wring out the mop thoroughly after saturating with the solution, and wipe across your varnished floors. Let the floors air dry after cleaning.
