Keeping the gearbox on your Peugeot 307 well-lubricated insures that it lasts for the life of the vehicle. You can help prevent premature wear and other problems that commonly affect gearboxes by checking the gearbox oil. The Peugeot 307 does not come with a dipstick for measuring the amount of oil in the gearbox. Instead, you must use an alternative method to check the gearbox oil.

Locate a flat, level service as a suitable work area. Use wheel ramps to raise the Peugeot 307 off the ground. Place chocks behind the wheels to prevent sudden movement.

Locate the gearbox level plug located on the underside of the gearbox in the centre of the drain plug. Place a catch pan underneath the level plug to catch gearbox oil. Start the engine and let it idle. With the engine running, hold the drain plug with a combination wrench while removing the gearbox level plug with another combination wrench.

Observe the flow of the gearbox oil. If the gearbox is full, the oil will trickle out of the middle of the drain plug before slowing to a drip. If the unit requires additional oil, very little or no oil will drip from the gearbox.

Reattach the gearbox level plug to the drain plug. Turn the engine off and open the bonnet. Use a socket wrench to remove the air filter housing from the engine bay. Disconnect the battery and remove the battery tray.

Locate the filler plug on top of the gearbox housing, behind the gearbox selector lever. Use the filler plug wrench to loosen and remove the filler plug. Insert the narrow nozzle of the filling cylinder into the filling receptacle and add 0.5 L of ESSO LT 71141 fluid. Remove the filling cylinder and reattach the plug when finished.

Reinsert the battery tray, battery and air filter housing into the engine bay. Reconnect the battery and close the bonnet. Seal the catch pan and remove it from underneath the vehicle. Remove the wheel chocks and drive the vehicle off of the wheel ramps.
