An iMac computer includes fans that help to cool it down to avoid overheating in key components of the computer. However, the fans turn on in response to internal sensors, and you cannot directly control them. If you want to increase the fan speed of an iMac, you can reset the system control that handles the fans or you can use one of two applications available to control the fan speed on an iMac.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Reset the System Management Controller to restore the fan speed to its default if it has slowed down for an unknown reason. Shut down the computer, unplug the AC adaptor, hold the power button on the back of the computer down for five seconds, release the button, reattach the power cord and press the power button to turn it on.

  2. 2

Download and install iMac Fan Control from Derman Enterprises (see Resources) to increase the cooling fan speed. This application allows you to select your own temperature thresholds and set the lowest speed for the three fans inside the iMac. You also have the ability to choose whether the temperature monitored is the CPU, the GPU or the CPU and the GPU combined.

  3. 3

Use smcFanControl to control the cooling fan speed on your iMac (see Resources). This application allows you to set the minimum speed for each of the three fans. You can also save settings. When the temperature rises, you can use your favourite settings to increase the fan speeds.
