Error correction mode (ECM) is a transmission protocol on fax machines and fax modems. It is primarily found on newer models. This feature can cause problems occasionally because the other machine that is sending or receiving the fax through ECM transmission must also have ECM enabled to work properly. The ECM option on the Brother 4100E fax machine can be turned off through the control panel, but this can be done only in service mode.
