Cloning the contents of your hard drive on your HP DV7 laptop will allow you to restore all of the files on your hard drive including the operating system in case your disk crashes. The DV7 series includes dual disk support, allowing you to install a second disk to the available compartment inside the computer. You can then clone your entire hard drive with Windows PC Complete Backup and Restore.

Disconnect the AC adaptor from the HP DV7. Close the lid and turn the notebook over. Unlock the tab securing the battery to its compartment.
Put on a antistatic wrist strap, or touch a metal surface, to ground yourself. Lift the battery out of its compartment.
Remove the six screws securing the hard drive and memory cover to the base of the computer. Set the cover aside.
Remove the two screws securing the hard drive cage to the laptop. Lift the cage out of its bay.
Remove any screws securing the cage together. Insert the new hard drive into the cage. Replace and tighten the screws you removed to secure the hard drive in place.
Insert the cage back into its original bay. Screw the bay to the laptop. Place the hard drive and memory cover back on the case.
Tighten the six screws into place. Place the battery back in its compartment and lock the tab in place.
Turn the HP DV7 over and open the lid. Reinsert the AC adaptor into the power jack. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Boot to Windows. Click "Start." Right-click "Computer." Select "Manage" from the contextual menu and then click "Disk Management."
Right-click your new disk from the bottom section of the window. Choose "New Simple Volume" from the contextual menu. Click "Next."
Select a drive letter to assign to your new hard disk. Click "Next." Click "Next." Click "Finish" and Windows will format the drive.
Click "Start" and type "backup" into the search box. Click "Backup and Restore Center."
Choose "Back up computer," located next to "Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore." Select your new hard disk from the drop-down menu. Click "Next."
Review and confirm your settings on the "Confirm your backup settings" page. Click "Start backup." Windows will clone your HP DV7 laptop's primary disk to the new hard disk you installed to your computer.
