How to Make a Light Box Sign
A light box sign will bring a glow to your message. (wall light image by Adrian Hillman from

Light boxes make a beautiful addition to your home as a decorative display. Artists can also use them for tracing designs and images. You can even display photos with backlit illumination. However, a novel way to use a light box is to turn it into a sign. You can do this by building your own light box and adding signage to it for a nice added touch.

  1. 1

Find a clean workspace outside to build your light box. Lay your wood planks out in the square shape of the final piece. Make sure everything fits and is measured right. Sand or trim down any rough edges.

  2. 2

Work on one corner at a time and build a simple square box. When screwing corners together, use a thin line of wood glue to help with the bond.

  3. 3

Drill a medium-sized hole in the bottom of the box. Thread the cord of your lamp kit though. Attach the four rubber feet to the bottom side. This will allow the cord to drop down from the light box cleanly.

  4. 4

Lay the light box down so what will be the front of the sign is facing up. Place the plexiglas sheet on the light box and drill screws through the plexiglas and into the wood. You should only need one screw per corner.

  5. 5

Turn the light box over with the bottom facing up. Install the low-volt light bulb.

  6. 6

Place the square wood sheet on the back of the light box sign and using one screw, attach the wood sheet at the top edge of the light box allowing the square wood plank to slide open and closed pivoting at the screw.

  7. 7

Stand the light box sign up on its rubber feet and plug the power cord in. Attach or silk screen your sign to the plexiglass and display.
