Though some schools may have rules and regulations regarding the appearance and design of the graduation gown, others may allow students to customise and personalise the gown as they wish. If your gown can be altered to fit your personal style, you can design it to reflect a message or simply display your emotions about graduation. Be sure the designs you add to the gown are school and family appropriate, as the graduation ceremony is attended by your peers as well as local authoritative figures and the graduates' families.
Check the rules and regulations regarding your graduation gown with any school distributed literature regarding the graduation protocol or by consulting a school official.
Glue gemstones to the border of the graduation gown with an adhesive for bonding gemstones to fabric. You can also adhere them in patterns or shapes across the front or back of the gown.
Adhere stickers to the material to create a design on the robe. For example, Stickers in the shape of colourful circles can be added all over the gown to create a polka dot look.
Pin patches to the front and back of the gown. Choose patches that support bands you like, activities you enjoy, such as fishing, or simply add a burst of colour to the graduation ensemble.
Draw messages and words in bubble or block letters on paper or fabric. Cut out the words and glue them with fabric glue to the top of your graduation cap or to the robe itself. For example, a popular choice for a message on top of a graduation cap is "Thanks Mom!"
Glue a variety of different textured and patterned fabric to the robe using fabric glue. Trace sections of the robe, such as the sleeves, onto a stencil and retrace the shapes onto lace, jersey fabric or an animal print fabric. Cut out the fabric and glue it onto the robe.
