A CF, or "compact flash," card is a type of small memory card similar to the kind found in a digital camera or cell phone. CF cards can also be used with regular computers. Making a compact flash card bootable (meaning your computer uses it to start instead of your hard drive) involves entering your computer's BIOS while the CF card is connected and changing a few settings.
- Skill level:
Put your compact flash card into your computer's CF card reader.
Reboot your computer.
Access your BIOS by pressing the key on your keyboard that is listed on-screen next to the word "BIOS" or "Setup" (depending on your computer manufacturer). This key will change based on manufacturer, so look on screen for the specific key.
Highlight "Boot" and hit "Enter."
Highlight "Primary Boot Device." Hit "Enter." From the list of hardware components you can pick, select the listing for your CF card reader. Your computer will now boot from your CF card.
