Decorate your home with empty wine crates as an eco-friendly and creative touch. Repurpose the wooden crates into everything from wall shelves, night stands, tables, storage boxes and plant holders. The rough-hewn wood crates will give any room in your home a rustic, country-inspired style. Customise the look of the crates by decorating them with craft items prior to using them as home decor Pull the crates from your basement or garbage bin and put them to good use around your home.

  1. 1

Use wine crates as creative night stands in a bedroom. Paint the exterior and interior of two wine crates with any colour paint and allow them to dry overnight. Set one crate, open side facing out, on each side of the bed as night stands. Use the top of the crates to hold lamps, picture frames and flower vases.

  2. 2

Place wine crates on the shelves of a large den, office or library bookcase. Set the crates on top of the shelves like drawers and use them to organise books, office and art supplies and files.

  3. 3

Turn a wine crate into a decorative and rustic planter. Choose a crate featuring an eye-catching wine brand logo or design. Fill the crate with potting soil and transplant live plants into it. Use culinary herbs, such as cilantro and chives, or colourful flowers. Display the crate planter on a patio or porch.

  4. 4

Hang wine crates on walls as handy and eye-catching shelves. Cut pieces of wallpaper to fit the inside centre and four sides of the crate. Apply spray adhesive to the backs of the paper pieces in a well-ventilated area. Press the wallpaper pieces into place inside the crate. Attach a sawtooth hanger to the back top of crate using a nail and hammer. Hang the crate on the wall and fill it with decorative items.

  5. 5

Stack two wine crates on top of each other in a bathroom corner. Use the crates to store toilet paper and rolled bath towels.
