Dying hair at home successfully requires following the right steps and taking necessary precautions. Goldwell Colorance Demi-Permanent Hair Colour is an example of a hair colour product that should be applied the proper way to prevent hair disasters. Improperly and sloppily applying hair dye can result in colour that is unwanted and unattractive.
Wear an old shirt you are not afraid to stain.
Smear a thin layer of petroleum jelly on your skin along your hair line. This will prevent your skin from staining if it comes in contact with the hair dye. You may also want to put a layer on the top of your ears.
Separate hair into four sections by gathering your hair in a half ponytail. Clip up the top part. Separate the bottom half into two sections -- the left section and the right section. Remove the clip and separate the top part into two sections -- the left section and the right section.
Put on gloves. This will protect your hands if they come in contact with the dye.
Use either a mixing bowl and paintbrush or an applicator tube with brush attachment. These supplies are available at beauty supply stores.
Mix two parts developer lotion and one part demi-permanent hair colour.
Apply colour to hair in sections. Start applying colour from the roots and work your way down to the ends.
Allow the dye to process for 15 to 30 minutes, checking the colour as it develops. When it is the right colour, rinse off the hair dye completely
Apply a hydrating conditioner to your hair.
Choose a hair colour that is no more than two shades from your current colour.
