Open the boot lid using the boot lever on the driver's-side kick panel or the boot key.
Peel back the carpet from the front edge of the boot on the side of the BMW that has the burnt-out tail light.
Locate the bulb socket for the brake light; it's the middle socket. Turn the socket counterclockwise and pull it away from the tail light housing.
Pull the brake-light bulb out of its socket and push the new bulb into the socket.
Place the socket into the tail light housing and turn it clockwise to lock it in place.
Push the boot carpet back into place.
