Whether you're hiking, camping, biking or just exploring, handheld navigators like the Garmin eTrex H GPS navigator, can make your outdoor experience safer and easier.     Press the "Power" key located on the right hand side of the LCD display below the "Quit/Page" key. This will turn on the Garmin eTrex H. You should be outside so the device can pick up the satellite signals.

    Wait 30 seconds to a minute for the Garmin eTrex H to locate the satellite signal. Once the signal is located, the LCD display will show where you are currently located.

    Turn on the backlight of the Garmin eTrex H if you're in a dark area or it's nighttime. While the device is on, press the "Power" key and then release it immediately. This will light up the LCD display for 30 seconds.

    Press the "Page/Quit" key located above the "Power" key on the right hand side of the Garmin eTrex H. This will bring up the menu options. For example, you can choose "Pointer" view, which shows a compass on the LCD display, or "Map" view, which will show you a map of your current location.

    Use the "Up" and "Down" keys, located on the top left hand side of the device, to scroll through the menu options. Press the "Enter/Mark" key, located below the "Up" and "Down" keys to make a menu selection.

    Create a route on your Garmin eTrex H by choosing "Route" from the menu page. Select your route, and choose "Follow" and then "Enter." You can also choose waypoints to add to your route.

Tips and warnings

  • Do not grip the Garmin eTrex H where the antenna is located. This could disrupt the signal. The antenna is located on the top front portion of the device.
