A Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) stream allows users to view live audio or video. According to Columbia University, RTSP was developed by the school, Progressive Networks and Netscape Communications for the efficient delivery of streaming media. To test an RTSP stream, you can simply try to play it with the free programs VLC Media Player, QuickTime and Winamp.

Download VLC Media Player (see Resources).
Install and run VLC Media Player.
Click "Media" on the menu bar and then click "Open Network Stream."
Type the address of the RTSP stream you want to test and click "Play."

Install and run QuickTime.
Select "File" from QuickTime's menu bar and click "Open URL."
Type in the address of the RTSP stream you want to test and click "OK."
Download the Winamp Media Player (see Resources).
Install and open Winamp.
Click the button in the top left corner of Winamp to open the menu.
Place your mouse over "Play" and select "URL."
Type the address of the RTSP stream you're testing and click "Open."
