A curriculum vitae, or CV, is a more detailed look at your academic and professional profile than a resume. It includes more accomplishments and examples of what you can do than can usually fit into a one-page resume. CVs are looked at and placed into a "yes" or "no" pile by employers, often in under twenty seconds. These tips can help your CV get into the pile that will lead to an interview.

    Provide a snapshot of who you are on the first page. Include your name, contact information and your key skills at the top of the first page. Write a short summary of what you are looking for and who you are. Then write a brief statement about your skills and experience.

    Write a section that more fully describes your knowledge, background and experience in an area related to the position for which you are applying. Include specific examples that can be measured in numbers or titles (of awards, for instance).

    Write about your academic and educational history. Connect skills you utilised as a student to the job for which you are applying if you are a recent graduate. For example, if you presented a paper at a conference, discuss your presentation skills.

    Add your career history in reverse chronological order. Include accomplishments under each job title, such as reducing office waste by developing a greener office system or increasing sales by a certain monetary amount.

    Include a short section for your personal details. This section should contain some interesting information about yourself (such as a hobby you enjoy or club to which you belong) that is relevant to the job for which you are applying. Write a list of references at the end of the CV.

    Keep the CV under two pages. The CV is not a complete biography of your professional and academic life. It is meant to provide some details to back up who you are and what you can do. Use powerful words and action verbs to convey your skills accurately. Your CV's formatting should be clean and easy to read.
