Volvos around the world offer smart ignition key capabilities. These keys, also known as chip keys or transponder keys, are synchronised to your engine electronically and used to start your car. While you can program the keys from your driver's seat in just minutes, you can also disconnect the codes from the keys in the same manner. This will allow you to disable the technology if you lose one of the other keys.

- Moderately Easy
Enter your Volvo and turn the key in the ignition to the "On" position.
Navigate through the dashboard driver's centre to "Language," "Vehicle Model," "Electrical," "Immobiliser" and "Program Immobiliser."
Select "Enter" and choose "Add Key."
Select "Enter" without entering a passcode. Click "Exit" to bypass the programming sequence. This will leave your key uncoded, and the ignition key will be deactivated.
