- Popsicle stick
- Heavy string
- Food colouring (optional)
- Glass jar
- Waxed paper
Boil 2 or 3 cups of water in a small pot. You can also boil the water in the microwave using a microwaveable-safe bowl.
Add sugar to the boiling water. How much sugar you need depends on how much it will take to saturate the water. Typically, you will need two times more sugar than water. Add a cup of sugar at a time, constantly stirring the mixture. Because the water is extremely hot, the sugar will easily dissolve into the water. The water should remain clear. You may add food colouring to the water if you desire.
Remove the pot from the heat and pour the sugar water into the glass jar. Cover the jar with waxed paper.
Tie the heavy string around the middle of the Popsicle stick. Put the string in the sugar water to coat it. Remove the string and lay it on waxed paper. Let the string sit and dry for about two days.
Place the coated string into the sugar water mixture, and leave it there for about a week. It is important to not move the string during this period because the mixture needs time to crystallise on the string. If you allow more time for crystallisation, you will see larger crystals.
