Facebook users who want to quickly express an emotion during a Facebook chat may want to use a smiley face to convey the feeling in an easy-going and friendly manner. Smiley faces predate popular computer usage, but once e-mailing and instant messaging became popular, smiley faces quickly took a prominent place in Internet communication. If an individual wants to convey a feeling of embarrassment or shyness while chatting on Facebook, the person may look for an appropriate blushing smiley to add to the chat.
