Dark circles are not always a sign of being tired. Often, as people age, eyelids become puffy and cast shadows, or hollows form under the eye. Dark circles may also be due to poor diet or allergies or merely to sinus congestion. To get rid of dark circles, try several methods at once to maximise results.

Get some rest. Many people set adequate time aside for sleep, but wake up several times during the night. If you are a light sleeper, invest in a noise machine. If you wake up frequently to use the rest room, try not to drink any fluids several hours before you retire to your bed.
Try home remedies. Though none of these solutions are scientifically proven, it might be worth testing them out to see if your body responds. Slice a cucumber with a knife and put the slices under your eyes for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. You can also peel the cucumber, purée it into a juice form and apply it with cotton balls. Cucumbers contain ingredients that lighten your skin and reduce puffiness.
Alter your diet. Dehydration and a poor diet may cause under-eye circles. Drink six to eight glasses of water a day to hydrate your skin from the inside out. If you drink coffee and soda daily, replace them with tea and water. Increase your iron intake by eating lean red meats and beans. Other nutrients to consider are Vitamin C, A and K. These elements are found in many eye creams, but you can easily incorporate them into your diet by eating more broccoli, kale, spinach and collard greens.
Rule out allergies. The skin under the eyes is very thin and can reflect the circulating blood beneath, which causes the appearance of dark circles. If you itch or rub your eyes, you can cause the vessels to bruise. Ask your doctor to test you for allergies and take any necessary medication.
