How to Replace the Jeep Grand Cherokee Gas Tank

Overtime, Jeep Grand Cherokee fuel tanks develop rust and accumulate sediment. This is especially true if the tank sits empty for a period of time. Rust and sediment can break loose and cause clogged filters. When the filter is clogged, the engine does not receive the amount of fuel required to operate. The fuel tank can be cleaned out; however, replacing the tank is easier.

Instructions

    Relieve Pressrue

  1. 1

    Apply the parking brake.

  2. 2

    Remove the gas cap.

  3. 3

    Remove the fuel pump relay from the power distribution centre under the hood. Look at the underside of the power distribution cover, and locate the fuel pump relay.

    Attempt to start the engine, cranking the engine for several seconds.

  5. 5

    Turn the ignition to "Off." Install the fuel pump relay.

  6. 6

    Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

    Fuel Tank Removal in a 1993 to 1998 Model

    Siphon the fuel into a gas container with a siphon kit.

  2. 2

    Raise the vehicle with a jack. Place jack stands underneath the vehicle for support. Lower the jack.

  3. 3

    Remove the electrical service connector on the bumper with a socket and ratchet.

  4. 4

    Support the skid plate with the jack. Remove the skid plate mounting bolts with a socket and ratchet. Lower the skid plate.

  5. 5

    Remove tow hooks or trailer hitch, if present.

  6. 6

    Remove the exhaust tail pipe heat shield mounting bolts with a socket and ratchet. Remove the heat shield.

  7. 7

    Pry the fuel line retainer off of the chassis with a flathead screwdriver.

  8. 8

    Depress the tabs on the fuel return line. Separate the lines. Depress the tabs on the fuel filter line. Separate the lines.

    Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector with a flathead screwdriver.

  10. 10

    Remove the fuel tank retaining strap nuts with a socket and ratchet. Move the straps out of the way.

  11. 11

    Loosen the clamps on the fuel filler hose and vapour return hose with a Phillips screwdriver.

    Slowly lower the fuel tank from the vehicle.

    1993 to 1998 Model Tank Installation

  1. 1

    Lift the fuel tank into position, using the jack.

  2. 2

    Attach the fuel filler hose and vapour return hose to the fuel tank.Tighten the clamps with a Phillips screwdriver.

    Pivot the fuel tank retaining straps into position. Tighten the fuel tank retaining strap nuts with a socket and ratchet. Lower the jack.

  4. 4

    Connect the fuel pump electrical connector, the fuel filter line and the fuel return line. Push the fuel line retainer into the chassis.

  5. 5

    Raise the heat shield. Install the mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts with a socket and ratchet.

    Install the tow hooks or trailer hitch, if equipped.

  7. 7

    Lift the skid plate into position with the jack. Tighten the skid plate mounting bolts with a socket and ratchet.

    Attach the electrical service connector to the bumper with a socket and ratchet.

  9. 9

    Raise the jack and remove the jack stands. Slowly, lower the vehicle.

    Pour the fuel into the gas tank. Connect the negative battery cable.

    1999 to 2000 Model Fuel Tank Removal

    Siphon the fuel into a gas container with a siphon kit.

    Raise the vehicle with a jack. Place jack stands underneath the vehicle for support, and lower the jack.

    Remove the electrical service connector on the bumper with a socket and ratchet.

    Pry the fuel line retainer off of the chassis with a flathead screwdriver.

    Depress the tabs on the fuel return line, and separate the lines. Depress the tabs on the fuel filter line, and separate the lines.

    Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector with a flathead screwdriver.

    Loosen the clamps on the fuel filler hose and vapour return hose with a Phillips screwdriver.

    Detach the retaining clips from the fuel tank shield on the rear bumper cover with a flathead screwdriver.

    Remove the fuel tank shield retaining bolts with a socket and ratchet. The shield and tank are one unit.

  10. 10

    Remove the nuts from the retaining straps with a wrench. Slowly, lower the fuel tank from the vehicle.

    1999 to 2000 Model Fuel Tank Installation

  1. 1

    Lift the fuel tank into position, using the jack.

  2. 2

    Install the fuel filler hose and vapour return hose. Tighten the clamps with a Phillips screwdriver.

  3. 3

    Install the fuel tank shield. Tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet.

  4. 4

    Attach the fuel tank shield to the clips on the rear bumper cover.

  5. 5

    Pivot the fuel tank retaining straps into position. Tighten the fuel tank retaining strap nuts with a socket and ratchet. Lower the jack.

  6. 6

    Attach the electrical service connector to the bumper with a socket and ratchet.

  7. 7

    Raise the jack, and remove the jack stands. Slowly, lower the vehicle.

  8. 8

    Pour the fuel into the gas tank. Connect the negative battery cable.
