An HP Desk Jet D1400 printer includes a built-in ink level monitoring chip. This chip determines the quantity of ink remaining inside cartridges, and relays this information back to your computer. After disabling the chip, you can manually check ink levels. If light or blotchy text appears after printing, an ink cartridge requires replacement.
