Dealing with a broken cell phone is frustrating. BlackBerry users can encounter extra difficulty when their devices malfunction because of the personal data the smart phones hold. Luckily, the BlackBerry desktop management software allows you to back up your information, even if the phone is broken. As long as the phone turns on, you can retrieve your messages.

Press the red power button to turn on the phone. The phone does not have to work past this point.
Plug the data cable into the BlackBerry port, then plug the USB end into the USB port of your computer. The desktop manager should automatically open. If not, double-click the icon to open it.
Select "Back Up." The program will back up your contacts, messages, notes, media files, applications and any other stored information on the phone. Wait for the program to indicate the back up is complete.
Unplug the phone from the computer. To retrieve the messages, plug the repaired or replaced Blackberry into the computer, and click "Restore."
