Place newspaper or heavy fabric over the surface where you will be filling the HP 940 cartridge. Hold the cartridge over the covered surface during all parts of the process in case you drip ink.
Find the line near the bottom of the HP 940 cartridge where the plastic comes together. Run the tip of a utility knife down the line to cut the label. Then, insert the tip of the utility knife into the line and move the knife back and forth to pry the cartridge sides apart.
Locate the rubber nub on the cartridge and find the small hole beside it. Stick a sewing needle into the rubber ball that blocks the small hole. Pull the needle out so that the rubber ball comes out of the hole with it.
Attach the syringe to the needle and fill the syringe with ink.
Insert the tip of the needle of the syringe into the small hole, going no deeper than 1/4 inch and slowly push on the plunger to inject the cartridge with the ink. Continue filling until ink appears around the hole or the syringe is out of ink, and then pull back on the syringe's plunger to draw 1ml back out of the cartridge.
Reinsert the ball that you took out of the hole by pressing it into place with your finger. Turn the cartridge over and put slight pressure on the sides. If the cartridge doesn't leak, snap the sides of the plastic back together.
