Bissell Carpet Cleaning Instructions

Updated February 21, 2017

Not only will Bissell carpet cleaning machines keep your carpets clean and looking new, they can limit the number of bacteria and allergens in your home. This is especially important if you have small children spending a lot of time crawling or playing on carpeted floors. Though each Bissell carpet cleaner has different steps for use, the basic process is the same. Consult your user's guide to determine specific steps for operating your Bissell machine.

Move any furniture out of the room you plan to clean.

Vacuum the floor thoroughly. This will remove the larger chunks of dirt on the carpet and help the Bissell machine clean more thoroughly.

Fill the water tank with clean, hot tap water. Most Bissell carpet cleaners have a 2-in-1 tank called a "tank-in-tank." One side holds clean water the machine will spray on the floor, and the other side holds dirty water the machine has sucked from the floor. Remove the tank from some machines by lifting the handle to unlock it and pulling it out of the machine. Other machines, such as the Bissell Little Green, may simply require you to tilt it out.

Remove the formula tank and fill it with cleaning solution. Do this by tilting it out of the machine and pulling up. Unscrew the cap and fill it with cleaning solution. Put the solution tank back into the machine.

Plug the machine in, turn it on and allow it to heat up for at least a minute.

Press the trigger and push the cleaning machine over an area of carpet. Pull the machine back over the same area while still depressing the trigger, which will spray water and cleaning solution over the area and scrub them into the carpet.

Release the trigger and push and pull the machine over the same area. This will allow the machine to suck up the dirty water and solution. Repeat this process until the area no longer has any excess moisture.

Continue this process across your entire carpeted area.

Refill the solution tank and water tank as needed throughout the process.

Remove the dirty tank portion of the tank-in-tank by removing it from the machine and pouring the water out of the spout. Pour the water down a utility tank or into a bucket.

Let the carpet dry completely once you are done cleaning. Put the furniture back into the room.
