Like most modern vehicles, the Dodge Ram features an engine management computer that handles various aspects of the vehicle, including throttle input, fuel management and transmission shifting. Many Ram owners install aftermarket chips that improve the Ram's overall performance. Installing or removing these chips may require the Ram's engine computer to be reset. After resetting the computer, there will be a learning period when the computer adjusts to new throttle inputs and shift points.

Instructions

  1. 1

Unlatch the hood by pulling the hood release handle near the driver's side foot well. Depress the handle underneath the Ram's grille and open the bonnet.

  2. 2

Disconnect the negative terminal cable from the battery with a combination wrench. Set the negative terminal cable aside and wait 20 minutes. This will drain the computer's stored electricity and clear its memory.

  3. 3

Reconnect the negative terminal cable to the battery. Close the bonnet.

Tips and warnings

  • This procedure will also clear the radio's preset stations, so you will have to manually reset them after the computer is reset.
