A bench grinder is a stone wheel spun by a motor. The whole assembly is fastened to a workbench. A grinding wheel has many uses, including sharpening knives. The grinding wheel produces a sharper blade than many other methods. The process of sharpening a knife on the grinding wheel produces sparks, so proper safety gear is necessary. The task should take you three to five minutes.

Instructions

  1. 1

Spread some lubricating oil on the blade of the knife. The oil will help protect the blade while it is being sharpened.

  2. 2

Turn on the grinding wheel. Hold the knife at a 45-degree angle to the grinding wheel.

  3. 3

Move the knife across the wheel from the base of the knife to the tip. Repeat this process three or four times.

  4. 4

Turn the knife over and repeat the process you used for sharpening the first side of the knife.

Tips and warnings

  • Equip yourself with the proper safety gear before you begin grinding. Wear a long-sleeve shirt and work gloves. Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from flying sparks. Ensure there is nothing combustible near the work area.
