How to Install a Chimney Mount Antenna

Antennas receive transmitted signals for electronic devices. Mounting these receiving antennas is a critical process of the overall installation. Antennas mounted to chimneys must never exceed 10 feet in height. Side pressure from high winds may damage the antenna and the chimney. In most applications, the mast provided with the separate antenna kit will range from six to eight feet in length. Chimney mounting kits for antennas come with all necessary hardware for the installation.

  1. 1

Install the top strap of the chimney mounting kit as high up on the chimney as possible. If a top cap or lip is mounted on the chimney, place the strap just below this point as horizontally level as possible. Be sure the metal strap resides flat against the chimney surface.

  2. 2

Insert the end of the metal strap through the strap connector. Pull the strap as tight as possible. Tighten the strap connector screw to place tension on the strap. Do not fully tighten the strap.

  3. 3

Position the lower chimney mounting strap four feet below the top strap. If there is not enough room, keep as much vertical distance as possible between the two straps. Level the lower strap using the brick courses as an indicator. Slip the metal strap through the strap connector. Tighten the screw to place some tension on the strap.

  4. 4

Attach the assembled antenna to the provided antenna mast. Follow the antenna manufacturer's directions in assembly and attachment. Various antennas will have different assembly and attachment hardware.

  5. 5

Fasten the antenna mast to the mounting brackets on the chimney straps. Align the mast so it is as vertical as possible. Tighten the top strap first so the strap is secure to the chimney.

  6. 6

Adjust the antenna for a good vertical alignment by moving the lower strap into the correct position. Tighten the mounting strap to the chimney. Double check the strap connector screws to ensure all screws are tight and secure.

Tips and warnings

  • Chimney mounting straps must be centred on the bricks and not the mortar joints.
  • Antennas should only be mounted to a chimney that is structurally sound. Gasses from the chimney may prematurely corrode the antenna elements, declining the reception capacity of the antenna.
