The formula for placing in international telephone call is simple. When dialling from within the United States you must first dial "011." Following this, you enter the country's "calling code," then the "city code." ("City codes" are the international equivalent of the state area codes used to place long distance phone calls within the U.S.) The last thing dialled is the actual local phone number. If you don't know what the calling code is for the country you want to call, or the city code, this is easy enough to look up.

Instructions

    Dialling an International Phone Number

  1. 1

Make sure you know the calling code for the country you want to call. If you don't know the country's calling code, you can look it up in the introductory pages in the White Pages phone book. Flip to the "International Calling Codes" section. If you don't have a White Pages phone book handy, you could also call 411 and ask the operator what the calling code is for a particular country. Or you can use one of the country code look up tools available on the Web (see the next section).

  2. 2

Be sure you also know the "city code" for the area you're calling. Again, if you don't know the city code, you can look it up in the introductory pages in the White Pages phone book, which has a few international city code listings. If you can't find the city you need in the White Pages phone book, or you don't have a phone book handy, you could also call 411 and ask the operator what the city calling code is for a particular area. Or you can use one of the country code look up tools available on the Web (see the next section)

  3. 3

Dial "011," followed by the country's "calling code," followed by the "city code," then the local phone number.
