Whether you use a tablecloth for daily meals or only special occasions, it is a fast, inexpensive method to transform the look of your table scape. If you want a clean, pressed look, make your tablecloth fit your square or rectangle table like a glove with this method for creating box corners.
Purchase a square or rectangular tablecloth that hangs one to 1 and 1/2 feet over the table. Solid fabric, rather than lace, is preferred for this technique.
Spread the table cloth over the table. Measure the sides, and adjust the tablecloth until the sides are even all around. Place a heavy object on every corner, such as a pot or paperweight.
Pull a corner out straight and then drop it directly below the corner of the table. Place your hand on the corner edge to keep the fabric in place. With your other hand, push the two folds on each side of the corner back, folding them at an angle and pull the edges of the fold toward the corner. Adjust as necessary until the two folds meet and the excess fabric folds underneath. Put a straight pin through the folds. Repeat with the other three corners.
Make a few small stitches close together to join the folds just under the bottom of the table. Tie off the thread underneath the tablecloth. Remove pins.
