How to remove super glue from eye glass lenses

It happens. Super Glue is clear and quick-drying, making it easy to accidentally apply to your eye glass lenses or any other nearby surface. The active ingredient in Super Glue products is cyanoacrylate. Cyanoacrylate is relatively easy to remove from glasses with plastic and glass lenses. However, cyanoacrylate can chemically bond with UV and other coatings applied to the surface of many lenses. Removing super glue from those lenses may also remove the portion of the coating directly beneath the Super Glue.

Moisten a cotton ball or pad with acetone to remove Super Glue from glass lenses. Use a de-bonding product with nitromethane -- a less abrasive solvent -- for glasses with plastic lenses.

Soak the super glue with the appropriate solvent for a few seconds by pressing the cotton against it.

Wipe the softened Super Glue away with the moistened cotton.

Repeat steps to remove any remaining Super Glue.

Rinse with water and wipe the lenses dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.


Acetone is the primary ingredient in most fingernail polish removers. Nitromethane based de-bonders are in many hobby stores. Test the solvent on the upper outside corner your lens, the least visible spot. Pop the lens out of its frame. Then apply a small amount of the solvent with a cotton swab. Leave it on for a few seconds and wipe it away. Examine the area in 30 minutes. If there is no erosion, the solvent will not alter your lenses.
