Whenever you install any HP (Hewlett Packard) device on your computer, a “HP Product Assistant” or “HP Software Update” may appear on your screen every now and then. HP computers may also come pre-installed with HP software updates. This helps you install updates and detect problems that may occur with the HP products. However, these notifications can get annoying and may interfere with your everyday computer use. You can stop HP updates from appearing on your screen by disabling them.

Disable the “Solution Updates” window. Disabling this window shall render your computer unable to detect HP product errors. To disable these updates, make sure that you have administrator privileges.
If you are using Windows XP, click on “Start” and then “Run.” Type “c:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\Product Assistant\bin\hprbupdate.exe” (without quotes) and then click “OK.” If you are using Windows Vista, click on the Windows icon and type “c:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\Product Assistant\bin\hprbupdate.exe” (without quotes)” in the search box. If the HP Product Assistant window does not appear, you may skip to Step 4.
Click “Preferences” under “HP Product Assistant automatically updates your solution…” and then select “Disable Solution Updates” under “Update Interval Preferences.” Click “Save” when you are finished.
Turn off current HP notifications. Click “Start” and then “All Programs.” Select “HP Products,” and then “HP Software Update.” Wait for the software update window to open.
Click “Next” to allow the utility to check for updates. Select “Critical Update to HP Product Assistant.” Follow further instructions to install the update and restart the computer if necessary.
Start the “HP Product Assistant.” Click on “Start,” All Programs” and then “HP Product Assistant.” Select “View Events” among the options listed on the left side of the screen. Read the current problems. For instance, if you see “Paper Jam” three times, this is what is causing the HP product assistant to keep appearing on your screen. Click on the problem to see available solutions. On the right side of the screen under “If this even happens again…” click on “Don’t notify me again.”
If not one of the above steps solves the problem or if you do not want HP software updates or product assistant to ever appear on your screen, uninstall the HP printers in your computer, and then reinstall. Upon installation, you can choose not to download the HP software utility by selecting “Custom Installation.” Otherwise, you may load “Add or Remove Programs” from the Control Panel and remove HP software update from there.
