How to Change a Widescreen Monitor to a Standard Letter Box

Users often refer to the 4:3 video aspect ratio as "letterbox," although that term actually refers to widescreen images viewed on a 4:3 screen. Users often prefer widescreen to this 4:3 ratio, citing the same reason as filmmakers: A wider screen better suits the wide, panoramic perspective with which human eyes view the world. Yet you may want to temporarily simulate change to the 4:3 aspect ratio, perhaps to preview how those using that ratio view content. Adjust your screen resolution to do this.

    Right-click a blank area of your Desktop.

    Select "Screen resolution."

    Click the down-arrow in the "Resolution" drop-down box.

    Select a resolution with a 4:3 aspect - for instance, 800 by 600, or 1024 by 768.

    Click on "OK." A window will open, asking you to confirm your change within 15 seconds.

    Click on "Keep changes."
