How to Connect a FireWire Camcorder to a USB

Updated February 21, 2017

FireWire is a connection port similar to USB. However, one side of the FireWire port is slightly curved with a "Y" icon printed next to it. The upside of FireWire over USB is the cable hookup provides a superior data transfer speed. However, not all computer systems have a FireWire port, so if you have a FireWire-only video camera, it is possible to hook up the camera system to a USB port on the computer.

Insert the FireWire cable into the FireWire connection port on the video camcorder.

Insert the other end of the FireWire cable into the FireWire end of the adaptor.

Connect the USB end of the adaptor into a USB port on the computer system.

Power on the digital video camera and set it to "View" mode. The computer should detect the FireWire video camera

Things You'll Need
