The food filter on a GE dishwasher should be cleaned once a month to ensure proper operation. Many smaller particles wash out in the drain but larger items are trapped in the food filter. The food filter is comprised of a main filter and a fine filter. The food filter assembly is a cup that holds the main filter and then is inserted into the fine filter. Cleaning the filter assembly takes only a few minutes.

Locate the cup containing the filter on the inside bottom of your GE dishwasher.
Lift up on the cup handle to remove it from the dishwasher.
Disassemble the parts of the food filter by pulling apart the pieces. The main filter unsnaps from inside the cup and the fine filter disengages from outside the cup.
Wash all the parts under warm water. Use a scrub brush to gently clean particles that are stuck onto the filters.
Insert the main filter into the cup and the cup into the fine filter. Set the assembly in position in the bottom of the dishwasher and press down to snap it in place.
