How to clean grey suede

Leather made from the skin of a calf is known as suede. Suede is a popular material for skirts, purses, footwear, jackets and sofas that comes in a variety of colours including grey. Unlike normal leather -- which has both a smooth and rough side -- grey suede is textured on both sides. Over time, suede will become dirty, dingy and require a thorough cleaning. Care must be taken when cleaning your grey suede item to prevent damage. Certain products -- such as bleach -- can damage your suede beyond repair.

Dip a toothbrush in white vinegar. Brush grease, oil spots and stains with the saturated toothbrush.

Allow the grey suede to air dry. Brush the item with a suede brush to restore the nap.

Dampen a sponge with white vinegar. Wipe the grey suede in the direction of the nap to remove dirt and other stuck-on debris.

Rub the surface dirt off the suede using an eraser. Continue rubbing with the eraser until you have removed the surface dirt.

Use an emery board to gently sand any stains that are present on the suede.

Brush the nap of the suede with a toothbrush.

Rub grey suede with a piece of fine sandpaper to rough up suede that has become smoothed.

Blot wet grey suede with several towels to remove as much moisture as possible. Allow the suede to air dry naturally away from direct heat.

Keep suede out of direct sunlight. Excessive sunlight will cause your grey suede to fade.

Store suede items in pillowcases instead of plastic bags. Pillowcases allow for proper air circulation.
