Your BlackBerry Bold 9700 can scan a UPC or 2D bar code using an downloaded application and the built-in camera. Scanning a bar code with your device is a handy way to quickly download information about a product. You can also use bar codes to help you locate a specific item or to comparison shop. Some retailers even use bar codes to send items such as coupons right to your BlackBerry. Visit BlackBerry's official application store, App World, to download the scanning program directly to your 9700.
- Skill level:
Visit the BlackBerry App World website from your computer. Click the "Browse Apps Online" button (see Resources).
Click the "Shopping" category. Several bar code scanning applications will be available, and the App World is updated often. Popular options are ScanLife, edocrab and Sccope US. Click on the "Get it Today" button next to the program you wish to download.
Enter in a valid e-mail address that is associated with your 9700. Click the "Send App Link" button.
Press the "Menu" button on your BlackBerry 9700 and open the "Messages" folder. Highlight the new message and press in the trackball to open it. Click the embedded link in the message and follow the on-screen prompts to download your application.
Locate the icon for the newly installed application by pressing the "Menu" button to open your BlackBerry's full menu. Press in the trackball to open the application.
Select the "Scan" option. Your BlackBerry's camera will open. Point the camera lens toward the bar code you wish to scan -- you will see the code on your phone's screen. Make sure the entire bar code is visible, then press in the "Right Convenience" key to scan the bar code.
