How to Make Your Own Play Money
Make play money with your kids at home. (money image by Horticulture from Fotolia.com)

Children love to play pretend. A great way to teach children about money is to create some play money they can use to buy fake groceries, or pay for a pretend doctor visit. When it comes to creating play money, you have several options. You can create the play money with a cartoon character or a child's picture on it, or you can make the play money look as real as possible.

Instructions

  1. 1

Place a real dollar bill over a sheet of green construction paper. Trace around the dollar bill with a pencil.

  2. 2

Lift the dollar bill up and move it to another spot on the construction paper. Trace again. Repeat until you have as many dollar bills as you need to play with. You may need to use more than one sheet of green construction paper.

  3. 3

Cut out your dollar bills with a pair of scissors.

  4. 4

Draw an oval in the middle of the dollar bill. Place a picture of your favourite character in the middle, or place a copy of your school photo in the oval. If you don't have any cut-out pictures, you can just draw a person or character inside the oval.

  5. 5

Take your markers and write the dollar amount in each of the four corners of your fake bill. You may want to have several 1s, a few 5s, and maybe a 10 or 20.

  6. 6

Add any other phrases or information to your dollar bill that you would like to see on it. For example, you may choose to add, "In God We Trust."

  1. 1

Place some dollar bills in your scanner. Make sure they are face down.

  2. 2

Scan and print the front side of the dollar bills using the colour option. Black and white will do if you do not have a colour cartridge, but it won't look as realistic.

  3. 3

Flip over the dollar bills and scan and print the backside using the colour option.

  4. 4

Cut out the fronts and backs of the printed dollar bills and glue them together to create your realistic play money.

Tips and warnings

  • You can do the same thing with any fake change you want to make. Trace the change on the appropriate coloured construction paper and cut it out, or scan it using the colour option.
  • If you don't want to take the time to create your own play money, you can print out already designed play money online.
