Apple asks iPhone 4 owners to take the device in for professional repair for the smallest fixes, even battery replacement, according to the iPhone 4 manual. If the back cover of your iPhone 4 is broken, cracked or scratched, but you don't want to lose access to your phone during the repair process and pay for the straightforward fix, you can replace the back cover yourself. You can also replace your phone's back cover to give it a fresh, flashy appearance with a custom cover. Once you've taken the old cover off, you'll need to replace it with a new or different back cover.

  1. 1

Place the new back piece over the exposed back of your iPhone 4. Stagger the new back piece so its top edge is about an 1/8 inch higher than the back edge of the phone.

  2. 2

Slide the back piece down onto the back of the phone, using gentle pressure. When the back piece's top edge and the phone's back edge are even, the cover is in place.

  3. 3

Turn the phone upside so you can see it's bottom edge. Notice two holes; these are the housing for the screws you had set aside. Use your micro screwdriver to screw the two small screws back into their housing. The back cover is now firmly attached.

Tips and warnings

  • To remove your iPhone 4's back cover, turn your phone upside down so that the thin bottom edge is facing you. Locate the two tiny screws on the bottom edge. Unscrew those screws using your micro screwdriver. Carefully allow them to fall out of the phone's bottom and into your hand, then set them aside into the bowl so you know where they are. Slide the back cover up about 1/8 inch, then pull it off.
  • Don't mess with the tag next to the battery that states "Authorized Service Provider Only," or change any of the phone's other mechanisms. Doing so will void your warranty.
