Remotes can control your computer just as they do your TV. (remote control image by Kelly Kane from Fotolia.com)

A computer or laptop remote starts, stops and pauses media, letting you control them from a distance. At least it does if you use Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center. Remotes rarely work with other applications, such as VLC Player, which plays additional formats. To link your remote to VLC Player, download an external plug-in.

Download the VLC Remote Control Plugin.

Run the plug-in's installation program.

In the first set-up screen, choose the current VLC Player program directory (often "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\") as the installation folder.

Click "Install."
