How to Check the Coolant in a Peugeot 406 Coupe

Updated February 21, 2017

Checking the coolant in a Peugeot 406 Coupe is vital to the health of the engine. Coolant helps to optimise engine performance and keeps the vehicle from over heating. If the coolant levels are off, serious damage to the engine can occur. Check coolant levels regularly whenever you check other fluids in the vehicle. Refill whenever the tank is low to prevent costly engine damage.

Touch the hood of the car to make sure the engine is cool before checking the coolant levels. Coolant expands with heat so its important that the engine is cool to get an accurate reading.

Open the bonnet to the car by pulling the release lever located under the steering column of the vehicle. Push the hood up and hold it in place with the tension bar.

Locate the coolant reservoir tank on the passenger-side of the vehicle. It's a clear tank with a circular lid that often says "Coolant Only" depending on the year of the vehicle.

Look on the side of the tank for the fill lines. Look at the line that says "Cool"; coolant levels should be at this line since the engine is cool. If they are below this line, the tank needs to be refilled. If they're well above this line, the tank needs to be drained.
