White flakes caused by dandruff are embarrassing, but you don't have to keep hiding behind light-coloured shirts. Dandruff isn't curable, but it is easily managed. And it's possible to do it in a jiffy if you know the source of your flakes. Dandruff has many causes, the most common of which is a yeast called Pityrosporum ovale. Overactive oil glands, stress and a high sugar intake also can trigger or exacerbate dandruff on your scalp.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- Skin moisturiser or hair conditioner
- Vitamins or supplements
Moisturise your scalp. Massage skin moisturiser or oil into your scalp a half hour before bathing and follow it with a moisturising conditioner.
Change shampoos. If your scalp is oily, switch to a shampoo formulated for oily hair. Also, use cold water when shampooing your hair. It closes pores and relieves the flaking problem.
Skip the sugar. High sugar intake can cause dandruff. Take a high potency B-complex to relieve the dandruff.
Take fish oil supplements. Poor nutrition, especially a deficiency in zinc or omega-3 fatty acids, can cause those white flakes.
Relax and get some rest. High stress and lack of sleep also can cause dandruff.
Keep the blow dryer at a safe distance. Blow-drying can dry out the scalp and cause dandruff. Hold your hair dryer at least 10 inches from your scalp.
