When you insert an external hard drive, such as the Western Digital Elements drive, into your computer, Windows either autoplays the drive based on its settings or it asks you what to do. You can configure the autoplay features so that it does not do anything when you plug the drive in. Disabling the autoplay features allows you to treat the external Western Digital Elements drive as a normal hard drive.

Connect your Western Digital Elements external hard drive to your computer.
Click "Start" and "Control Panel."
Select "All Control Panel items" to get the full list of Control Panel options.
Clear "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices" and click "Save" to completely disable all autoplay features on your devices. Scroll through the list of options to set a disabled autoplay on a case by case basis, using the drop-down menu to set the autoplay option to "Disabled." Click "Save."
